Dr. Bell received his M.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University and also holds several other degrees, including a B.S. from Stanford University and an M.A. from the University of Virginia. He served as chief resident at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Gastroenterology, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons.
