LINX Procedure for GERD

The LINX Reflux Management System is a new, implantable device to treat acid reflux disease. It consists of a series of magnetic beads held together by a titanium wire. Using laparoscopic surgery, the LINX device is placed around the lower esophagus. LINX is designed to be a lifelong implant.

In long term studies (4 year follow up) 80% of patients normalized the acid exposure in the distal esophagus. 80% of patients had complete cessation of PPIs, and 100% had improved quality of life measures for GERD. Patients are able to belch and vomit, so it is more physiologic than other GERD procedures. A small number of patients have had minor issues with swallowing (dysphagia) which usually resolves with time. LINX is titanium, and the latest model has been approved for MRIs up to 1.5 Tesla.

Reflux is caused by a weak muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) that allows acid and bile to flow back from the stomach into the esophagus, creating pain and often causing damage to the lining of the esophagus.

LINX is a flexible ring of small magnets placed around the LES during a minimally invasive procedure. The strength of the magnets helps keep the weak LES closed to prevent reflux.

When you swallow, LINX opens temporarily to allow food and liquid to pass into the stomach.
